{Cupcake Monday} 4th of July Cupcakes in a Jar!

Share To:

Happy Summer everyone!  It’s Glory of Glorious Treats here with an easy and eye catching dessert perfect for the 4th of July. I’ve been a bit obsessed with cute desserts in a jar recently, and thought the 4th of July would be the perfect opportunity to make one. I baked up a batch of vanilla cupcakes (using my favorite box mix), layered some delicious Cream Cheese Frosting and dressed them up the great set of Free Memorial Day Printables designed by The TomKat Studio. (I simply using 3 of the 4 designs they work perfectly for the 4th of July).

~ How to make 4th of July Cupcakes in a Jar ~

You’ll need…

Jars (I used 1/2 pint canning jars)

1 Vanilla cake mix (from a box or from scratch)

Frosting (from a can or homemade)

Tomkat Studio Memorial Day Free Printables (use 3 of the 4 designs)

Prepare the batter of your favorite vanilla cake (from a box or from scratch).  Divide the batter as equally as possible  into three bowls.  Color one bowl of batter red, and one blue (using concentrated gel coloring).  The final bowl will remain uncolored.  Prepare 3- 9″ cake pans (round or square) by greasing the pan lightly (with butter or oil), and lining with parchment paper.  Fill pans with batter.   Bake cakes according to recipe instructions.

Once baked, cool cakes completely.  Remove cakes from pans, and level cakes as needed.  Then, use a 2″ round cookie cutter to cut out circles of cake.  Prepare a batch of frosting (I used my Cream Cheese Frosting) and fill a piping bag fitted with a large round or star tip.  Layer cake and frosting as shown above (blue cake, a little frosting, white cake, a little frosting, red cake, a nice swirl of frosting).  Top with festive sprinkles.

*Note- the cupcakes in a jar could also be make using cupcakes, cut in half, then used as directed above.

Dress up your cupcakes in a jar with ribbon and  The Tomkat Studio Free Printable Memorial Day designs.  Use the printables as cupcake toppers (if you are serving the cupcake jars open), or as a finishing label, if you plan to use the cupcake jars as favors or gifts.

  5. Sue says:

  6. Ashley says:

I absolutely LOVE these! I can’t wait to make them for our family vacation!

  7. Melissa says:

Do you know how many jars you need for one box of cake mix?

    • Glory says:

I bought my jars in a case of 12 from Wal-mart. One cake mix will probably make a coulple more than 12 jars, so it’s up to you if you want to buy one or two cases of jars. Happy Baking!

  8. Barbie says:

I love these. I am going to try and make them for a farewell party in pink, blue & white. Unfortunatley where I live jars are hard to come by but i have some that are slightly smaller. My question is do I assemble in the jar as I go or try and put it all together and put it in the fridge to make it firm and then drop it into the jar and ice the top . . . Thanks for your help.

Such a cute idea! It’s also a great idea if you can’t think of a parting gift at a kid’s party and you can send the kids home with their dessert instead of eating it there. Sometimes we run out of time at our parties to do everything -games, pinata, jumping castle, presents, and cake. It might be fun to sing happy birthday with candles in a pizza instead of cake, do games, pinata and then before the kids know it, it’s time to leave and you can send them off with their adorable cupcake in a jar!

  14. Heather says:

Wow! Thank you for this idea! I am really excited to try them. The best part is they will be way easier to transport than regular cupcakes!!!

  15. I am stopping by today to let you know that I featured your cupcakes in a jar 🙂 on my pinterest loves of the week #6 on my blog so make sure to check it out and grab my button

All these absulutely adorable patriotic ideas. Can’t believe I’ve passed up Memorial Day and will be on a ship on the 4th….Now if I can just figure out a way to carry on my Kitchen Aid…. Well, there’s always veteran’s day, isn’t there? Or maybe 2012 🙁 I LOVE your idea!

  19. Sunny says:

    Hi Glory,
These looks great (and so festive)! I would definitely like to try making these, but as I’m a baking novice, I need a little more guidance… after the baking part, I will have three 9″cakes… based on the directions, should I be able to cut out 12 2″ circles from each cake, leaving me with 36 small 2″ rounds (12 of each color) to assemble 12 red/white/blue cakes in a jar? I guess my concern is that it seems like it’d be difficult to get 12 2″ circles from one 9″ cake… help!!

    Thank you!

    • Glory says:

You’ve got it all right so far. The total number of jars you make will vary based on a few things… if you’re using a 2″ cutter or baking cupcakes and using cupcake halves. To be fair, I made these cupcakes in a jar with left over cake from my 4th of July Flag cake, so I’m not sure how many circles you’ll be able to get from the 9″ pans. You may be right, probably more like 8-10.

  20. kls says:

Do the designs fit a specific label size or do I just print them on paper and glue them on the jar lids?

  21. Katie says:

I love these!!! I really want to make them, but I’ve never done any jar cakes before and I’m not sure how I get them in the jar?! I’m sure its really simple!

  22. So Pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  23. Deanna says:

Have to make these – so cute – son’s birthday is July 4th and these will be great for the party!

  24. Lorraine says:

Love these!!!!! My son just enlisted in the Navy. Will for sure be making these for his going away party!!

  25. btanders says:

  27. Brianna says:

How do you remove them without getting a handful of frosting?

  28. DeeDee says:

I used this idea for Read Across America (Dr. Seuss) using only red and white cake and a Cat in the Hat sticker….too cute! (The kids have to take the treats home, so this idea made them very backpack-portable!)

  29. These are adorable. I love how they are in individual jars. Keeps bugs away too!

I know this is from last year, but this year I am hosting a patriotic link party. I don’t mind older posts. If you would like to link-up here is the link:

  30. Nicole says:

Hello, love this idea. Couple questions though, what is the best way to put the cake into the jar and how should people eat it? Please reply, thanks.:-)

  31. Lisa says:

Well, that sucks. I only read down in the comments to where you said one cake mix makes 12-15 jars. Try only 7! I am going to have to go out and find more cake mix. How much gel coloring do you need to add? I put almost a tsp., but it still looks pink. Maybe I’m not cut out for baking…they are so clever & cute!
