Hello, hello! I’m so excited to be back today with an important house update… our choice for main flooring! As I shared in this blog post, I narrowed flooring selections down to several options. We knew that we wanted either wood plank tile (like we chose for our last home) or hardwood floors for our current home project. My team and I headed to our local Floor & Decor in Tempe to check out all of the beautiful options I had my eye on. This is the Graphite Birch Solid Hardwood

This is the Montpellier Oak Engineered Hardwood

And the Frenchwood Larch Wood Plank Tile

And the Shelburne Saddle Wood Plank Tile

This is the Castille Wenque Wood Plank Tile we used in our last home along with the Birch Forest Gray Wood Plank Tile.

The decision process was tough! I quickly eliminated the Castille Wenque because even though it is so gorgeous, we used it in our last home and I wanted to try something different! The Birch Forest Gray Wood Plank Tile was really pretty too, but it was too light for my vision for this house. I was in love with the dark, rich colors of the Graphite Birch Solid Hardwood but I just wished the planks were bigger (I like big planks and I cannot lie!). So that brought it down to two choices, the Montpellier Oak Engineered Hardwood and the Shelburne Saddle Wood Plank Tile. I worked with Floor & Decor’s in-house designer, Debra who put together detailed quotes for me for each flooring option. Floor & Decor offers free design services in all of their locations, so you can get professional help when making your flooring decisions! Debra also made sure there was enough product in-stock for both of the final options I was choosing between. One the best things about Floor & Decor is the huge variety of in-stock wood, tile and stone products they offer. No need to wait weeks for your materials to arrive! I took my samples and quotes home to review with my husband so we could make a decision.

So, which one did we choose?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

This one!

The Montpellier Oak Engineered Hardwood. You guys. It’s so gorgeous! I am super excited about it and can’t wait to see it in the house. The color is a mix of natural wood and gray tones. The texture is like butter… super soft. One of the main reasons I really wanted hardwood for this particular house is because I really wanted the staircase and upstairs landing to be wood look, rather than carpet. The staircase is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. While you can do wood plank tile on stairs (we did it in our Flagstaff vacation home) it is definitely not as aesthetically pleasing as wood on stairs. Debra helped me figure out how many custom bullnose pieces I will need for the stairs as well as for the few steps down to our sunken formal living room. I think it is going to be absolutely gorgeous!

While we were visiting Floor & Decor, we also had so much fun checking out the wide range of tile and stone available. I really plan on getting creative in the small spaces in this house (bathrooms/laundry, etc) so I am on the hunt for unique materials for the bathroom floors, showers and backsplashes. I looked at so many possibilities and picked up a few samples while we were there. I’ll keep you posted on these decisions too! Here are a few of my favorites…

I’m loving the hexagon tile trend! This Carrara White Hexagon Marble Mosaic is gorgeous!

This Thassos Herringbone Marble Mosaic had such a beautiful texture and I love how pure white it is…

And I love this Dolomite White Marble Tile. The 12″ x 4″ size is unique and amazing.

Fun, fun! Are you dreaming about remodeling any of the rooms in your house? I want to hear about it!

Kim, I love, love the floor you picked!! So gorgeous! I cant wait to see it all in your new home. I would love to get new countertops in my kitchen! I am dreaming of white quartz!!

  2. Toni K. says:

Thanks for sharing!! Picking flooring is so hard for me, we are SLOWLY deciding what we want to do in our kitchen. It’s only 7 years old, but tray for something new and more me! Love these options you chose.

  3. Chrissy Fee says:

We are debating going with Montpellier oak floors too! Were you told you had to seal them? My father in law purchased a similar wood floor (matte finished) and he sealed them because within the first week of installing, a water ring from a bucket left marks. I am nervous!

  4. Christina says:

    Hi Kim,

I love your choice! Are you going to be using this flooring throughout the kitchen? I’m curious what your thoughts are on how it will hold up with any spills or water damage?

I can’t wait for the install reveal!

    Thanks!
    Christina

      Hi Christina!

Yes, I am using it in the kitchen! My kids have been given a lesson about any spills that may happen (to clean them up immediately!) I’m not too worried about it because there is enough variation in the colors/pattern of the floor that I think anything will blend right in. I’ll keep you posted how it goes once we are moved in!

A note from Floor and Decor:

Wood is not inherently water resistant, and it will try to absorb and retain any water it comes in contact with by its very nature. Some wood floors that are higher gloss are more resilient because of the poly-urethane-like topcoat, but matte finish floors like Montpellier are not. The natural color variation and multiple surface textures on the Montpellier floor will provide pretty good protection from scratches and marks becoming an issue, and the cleaner will help with stains, provided they are addressed immediately; again – like any wood floor.

      Hope this helps!

  5. Hakkarainen Corina says:

Love the flooring Kim! We are looking to do our entire house minus bathroom and laundry in something similar. Would you recommend your installer? Was it just through floor & decor? Living in Chandler and would love a recommendation. Thanks!

  6. Love this! Thanks for all the great ideas!

  7. JEANNE says:

    Hi Kim,

I love the look of the floors you picked! How was the wear and tear on them after you installed them with the kids, etc.? Did they scratch or stain easily? Do they feel like hardwood? My husband is 100% sold on the engineered hardwood but I really want to use them in my kitchen and first floor!

    Thank you!

    Jeanne

  8. amber says:

How did the floors turn out? We are looking to buy these this week and have a dog and wonder about how they scratched.

    Thanks

  9. Jewel says:

I am looking for wide, long planks. What lengths did this floor come in. I don’t really want short ones as our house is very open with tall ceilings, I think long boards would be the best.
